Special guest this week is Kristen Smith, the foundress of Affirmations and Innovations and ModiYoga. Contact her via email at kristen@affirmationsandinnovations.com or on IG at @affirmations_innovations.

Mx Zephy:

Lady Charmaine, are you sure this Shadow Work is lightwork? It looks questionable to me.

Lady Charmaine:

It's fine Mx Zephy.

Mx Zephy:

But what about toxic light work?

Lady Charmaine:

Ah, just grab a warm beverage and settle in.

Mx Zephy:

End scene! Just misfits

Lady Charmaine:

Hello beautiful misfits! Are you fed up with the good vibes only crowd?

Mx Zephy:

Mx Zephy:

Feeling just trapped?

Lady Charmaine:

Us too. Join us as we turn the light out on spirituality and get comfortable with the shadows right now with Misfit Mondays.

Mx Zephy:

Mx Zephy here, pronouns xe | xem and with me as the fabulous lady Charmaine pronouns she | her. So today let's put away our glittery assumptions, that little razzle dazzle of what I want is surely what you want and are expecting. As my mama used to say, you know what happens when we assume you make an ass out of you and me. So today we discover that all that glitters is not gold, it's platinum. And today we have a very special guest popping in and we are so excited for you to get uplifted with her modifications. It's a brand and it's a mantra, mantra, Lord. It must be that time of the month for me. Before we introduced her let's pause for just a second. I can almost hear some of y'all yelling, what the hell i the Platinum rule. Bless your heart. So Milton Bennett in the 1970s he was a communication psychologist, therapist person, he was some he was a researcher academic person and he said that the golden rule "enjoins us to treat others as we would like to be treated. But inherent in the rule is an assumption of similarity that others will be like ourselves and therefore we want to be treated similarly. Essential, essential similarity implies a single absolute reality. And such thinking is the foundation of ethnocentrism. To overcome the golden rule, we must assume essential differences among people and allow for multiple realities. When we apply these principles to ourselves, it leads us to the communication strategy of empathy, whereby we imagine we experience the world from another person's perspective." So too long, didn't read golden rule is like walking into a restaurant with an allergy and asking for a substitution. They tell you fuck no. And then it doesn't matter what not that allergies life threatening or not. And the Platinum rule says, Let's check that nature. Let's check that egocentric nature and let's ask and learn how others want to be treated, then believe their needs so that we can foster an intentional relationship for strangers and loved ones alike that's grounded in trust and communication. So yes, we all have a desire connection and also how we how we desire it is a fount of imagination. So today, we'll chat more in depth about some currents of imagination that you can sail into to keep it platinum. So lady Charmaine Come sail away. leave me with listen 70s references like decades of music.

Lady Charmaine:

I'm here. I just got blown right in. I'm here to sail with you. So today we are going to introduce a very special guest. And I found her by great happenstance of the universe, which is how all great things come. And on top of that, not only did I become a yoga teacher through her program, but Zeph also joined me on this Grand Parade. And then, dun dun duh. She invited us to her podcast. And in an instant, that's when I realized, boom pow, these Sagittarius hotties got some, some style, we should start our own podcast. And now we're here, Misfit Mondays. And our special guest is Kristen Smith of Modiyoga, and Affirmations and Innovations, and every other grand thing that she does, but we're gonna let her tell you all about that. So hi, welcome Kristen.

Kristen:

Hello, thank you so much for having me. I adore both of you. I am so excited a big fan of the podcast. So excited to be here. Oh,

Lady Charmaine:

air for that. So my pronouns are she hers and I am a serial entrepreneur. So that's what Charmaine meant by that. I created a lifestyle brand I want to say it's becoming affirmations and innovations. And within that we've created Modiyoga, So modiyoga is a style of yoga instruction that is inclusive to everyone in the sense that it is embracing and empowering people to choose modifications normalizing them so that it is not Something that is seen as less than and we have virtual studio, which both of you are instructors in. And so we are, we're building that out with clients that are just so rewarding. And we have so many aha moments all the time with all of us, with our embracing ourselves, stepping into our power, and giving ourselves a little bit of a break, because a lot of us are really high achievers. So the whole point of everything that I do is trying to bring people that peace of mind that they get to be their full selves, but they also get to be this part of themselves, that isn't perfect. Because that's the that's when we truly find our our true bliss when we're not putting all this pressure on ourselves. So that's a little bit about a little bit about what I believe A little bit about you. Yeah, a little bit. So how did you go from what may be kind of a status quo yoga person into saying, you know, what, screw this, I'm going to build my own yoga. What was the pinnacle in your life that changed that up?

Kristen:

So I've never been the stereotype? Well, I said, I practiced yoga for two years in a sort of stereotypical way. But my first introduction to yoga was actually for class when I was in my undergrad, it for a special education, I was I had to learn how to do something new, that I would be intimidated to try. And so that was yoga. And I chose that. And I had to do this whole paper about, you know, what was that experience to do something that I didn't know I could be good at. Right. And so that's sort of what started planting the seed. And then about six or seven years later, after I started practicing more, I was just noticing how people like myself, who are athletes, who don't have a lot of flexibility, and a lot of areas, can't do all the poses without using props, or without modifying in some way. And it was seen as less than was sort of discouraged, it was corrected. And it made me feel at the competitive part of me was just not happy about that, because I just wanted to perform. And so I decided to work with athletes first, because that was what I understood. And as I worked with them, I was like this is something everyone could benefit from, because everyone, especially those who are higher achievers, or people who are trying to show up in the world, need that motivation or that invitation to modify something that's low pressure, that should just be taken as what it is. for who we are, when we show up to the mat and not anything else. Instead of trying to put these unrealistic expectations on ourselves.

Lady Charmaine:

I love it, 30 snaps, rewind and three snaps again for all of that, because we've talked a little bit about my yoga journey here on the podcast. And everything that Modiyoga represents and stands for which is really yoga for everybody and every body and meeting people where they're at is it fills my heart, that's what I'm here for. And as a bigger Yogi, it I mean, I'm going to use the props anyway. So why feel bad about it? Right? And why not show other people how to also use those props, and not just use those props, but use things that they might have readily available around their home, if they don't have the financial means to go out and, and buy a prop like, okay. But what is the overall mission of the Modiyoga brand? Does he want to step into that?

Kristen:

Sure. So we're just on a mission to reach as many people as possible. And it sounds so cliche, but that's the truth. We have mostly virtual platform. And so it's very possible to reach 1000s and millions of people. And we're doing it by building up a team. So it's not just me, I knew right when I started all this that I didn't want to do it all alone. I had to create everything and get all that information together to have something to offer. And then I knew I needed to build a team around me to make it a bigger mission. So our real goal is to show up in spaces where yoga may not exist right now. So something like schools or something like conferences. In the virtual space. It's more common this year, but typically it was a little, it was seen as something that's free and something that was pre recorded. But we're just jumping in and all just all the way and saying we're going to do this live, we're going to make this really high value we're going to interact with you, we're going to make this make every single person who tries this feel like they're heard, like their needs are met. So we just start on this mission to find the people who need this, no matter where they are, they could look like someone who would practice yoga, they could look like someone who wouldn't stereotypically practice yoga, because Yoga is not for a certain archetype, it's not for a certain type of person, is something that can be adapted. And something that can be done at the base level with the breath, all the way through to more of a fitness style, experience. And goals play a role in what you'll get is we want to just we want to offer a spectrum. And we want to bring that people who really need that, and people who feel excluded otherwise.

Mx Zephy:

I really love this, and what I'm what I think is so great here, Kristen is like you talk about Modiyoga from this like place of Connect, like and it's very inclusive, like, it's like, how do we how do we connect not only with our bodies, but how do we also be inclusive with our bodies. And it's not only just the people from the outside in, it's also from the people who are actually practicing too. Looking at that inclusion within yourself. How are you showing up on the mat? What's your Connect, and you know, in German, I really love that, you know, you share a little bit about your experience, because, you know, we can see from your experience, that this is how Modiyoga is actually operating. So it's not just Kristen saying shit out her ass and just saying, you know what, this is how we do it. And then like, not really practicing what she preaches, but like, you know, Charmaine, you're just like, Hey, this is how it showed up. I like I'm a bigger person. Like, I think we said the word fluffier on here before so stop me.

Lady Charmaine:

Let me know I said fluffy, I'm fluffy,

Kristen:

Fluffy, is my favorite.

Mx Zephy:

So I think like and even then like, and saying, hey, look, I got props, and fuck it, I'm gonna use them. And I love that. And I think that's what that Platinum rule piece comes in is saying, Let's connect that piece of empathy. And it's empathy within like ourselves, but empathy also with others, and finding that on that mat in that space, where it's safe for you today, right now.

Lady Charmaine:

Absolutely. And this really is about meeting people where they're at, I know, when I first connected with Kristen, it was just like an instantaneous, yes, this is my new friend, we're gonna do this. And but at the same token here, I just did a live event yesterday and did a body positive yoga break for a conference online or virtual conference, and had some really great feedback, you know, because it got to people who wouldn't normally step inside of a yoga studio, it got to a group of corporate individuals that do a lot of other things in their daily lives, and are now interested in partaking in more of that. And so it really is meeting a variety of people where they're at. And I think that really comes back to this Platinum rule of meeting people where they are, and treating them in a way that they want to be treated. So they want to be offered. They don't want to be pushed. Right? We're not here. We're not here to be their guru. We're not here to be like, you need to do yoga. Everybody should do yoga. Now, my personal opinion, yeah, I think it would help a lot of people, a lot of people, however, I'm offering it, we're offering it and you get to choose your own adventure in life. And we hope it leads you to one of our mats your own mat with us but yeah, I think that that is the approach that we need to take is it really where we are offering a space and when we're doing giving the Platinum rule and making that our fore thought we are offering someone space to show up authentically because we're not pushing our own bias and rose colored glasses on to their faces. Zeph get in here and talk me off the ledge before I go down a hill.

Mx Zephy:

I mean, I would love to go down a fucking rabbit hole you do. I know you like it. Just keep going. Keep going.

Lady Charmaine:

see you over there. You're like, Huh, just go No, no, I was like, Oh, no, Alice, you didn't drink in that.

Mx Zephy:

And the thing I wanted to go is because this all sounds very love and light like oh, this is amazing. Let's let's connect and be all friends and like let's but I'm also thinking like, how is this shadow work? Like, what piece of this shows up at some darkness in us? Um, and I think for me, it's showing up is you know, it's that piece of the ego like we talk and I love that this is like the way the universe is working because I didn't think we actually planned it that way. We did have it after eat like have the episodes after ego conversation, but it's kind of showing off magically, that this is the way it's working. But I think that when we're talking about that Platinum rule, it's us confronting that piece of us that always wants to be the center of attention, and always wants to have those needs met first and foremost, because I think like within the Platinum rule, there's this dynamic of power and privilege, because there's certain ways that things have, quote, unquote, always been done. And so there's that expectation that they need to be done that way. And so we kind of lose that ability to imagine what could be different. And I think that's where that shadow piece comes in. Is it kind of hinders our ability to imagine, how can I, how can I, you know, connect with this person in a way that's honest in a way that's real? And ask, What do you need? And how can I help you get what you need? I think that's me going off a ledge myself.

Kristen:

There's so much on that point, though. I mean, from my experience, just in the virtual studio, what I've seen as our instructors will give a lot of detailed information about how to modify poses, right, and, and our students are taking that in and applying it elsewhere, which is the ultimate goal, because I have noticed, because a lot of the students leave their video on, I'll see them taking a block, when it wasn't even recommended. I'll see them taking a blanket under their knees or adding an extra blanket, especially when it's invited to do so but also on their own, because we are breaking that down in the shadow work. And this is big, because most of the people who've joined us are high performers, they're used to achieving they're used to doing things that are a little bit, I don't know, not normal, a little more extraordinary. So when they step into this space, they don't really know what to do with it. They feel like they have to perform at first and then. And then it's really amazing to see that transition, where it's like that you're fighting with your mind a little saying, Is it really okay for me to take that modification, though? I am so willing to be welcoming to everyone else making modifications. I am open minded and open hearted, you know, there's that love and light piece. But then it comes back to yourself, would you take that compassion to yourself? Do you bring that compassion home and and apply it to your own life. And that's what I want people to take off the mat as well. And I have I've noticed since I started teaching and instructing Modiyoga, I started to notice other low pressure environments where it was safe to modify where it's safe to say my schedule gets to be flexible, I still get to get everything done, I get to get it done my way, I also get to apply this to other things, like when I'm doing chores, maybe I don't have to do them the same exact order that other people might, maybe I'm going to do it my way, and maybe it's not going to be perfect, but I still get the job done. And that's exactly what we want, we start with the yoga and hope that it goes off.

Lady Charmaine:

I have to say that that is spot on. The minute so when I started training, I was probably 30 days in when I realized that I was making adjustments to my boundaries in very profound ways. Because I realized I didn't have to be on all the time. And I didn't have to give my on self to others all the time. You know, some people are just going to get what they get, you get what you get, you don't throw a fit, right. And I also noticed that I have kind of a duality, where I work a very corporate day job and then in the evenings I do energy healing and yoga. And it allows me one to have balance, but then to also I could bring the same tips into my corporate world breathing techniques Hello, have you ever sat through a pretty terrible conference call and you just need to breathe that's where you know that's what I do the four by four post it breath that I just trace the post it with my eyes and I and I breathe that's that's exactly what it is. And it's made so many great changes in my life that when I get on the mat and I think you said this once Kristen is that you could see like my, my whole demeanor change or something when I'm on the mat. And to be I don't even notice it. Like I just go into my zone. I don't even know I'm teaching people like I'm just there talking to myself and doing yoga. And I talk to everyone after class so it's amazing how it just after you start this routine, this habit that it so easily falls on you like a warm blanket, you know At the times that you need it, because it's just comforting, it becomes that comfort, that comfortable space to show up in.

Kristen:

Love that's so beautiful and so true. And what I see from you is that you embrace the slow, you embrace the, because you work so fast, you know, in your day to day things. When you step on the mat, and notice you slow down, I notice you are taking inventory of the inside instead of what's going on in the outside. And the more we can apply that elsewheres, we're going to show up better, we're going to show up more balanced, we're going to be able to say I'm all taken care of inside, so I can show up better outside, I've noticed a big shift to myself with this. More I go deep, the more I face those shadows face that perfectionsim face, the things in my life that I have been sent on this journey to face, I think, and I actually do the work and I get through the lessons faster, instead of being hit in the face of it over and over, I can show up to people better. And I can say I'm all here because I'm good inside. And that's what we want people who come to our yoga classes to experience that's that Platinum rule, you need to it's good for you, we're here to offer it, we're going to serve it, but you're going to take what you want it and you're going to add what you want. And that's because that's for you. And when you get that you're going to heal the inside of you, you're going to heal your mindset, you're going to heal your central nervous system, you're just going to get the physical and the mental, so that you can show up in the world better. If you took like a lunch break yoga session, you're probably going to go back to the second half of your day a little bit more compassionate, because you gave yourself some compassion. If you take one at night before you go to dinner with the family, you're you're giving yourself that space to say I showed up for my work, then I showed up for myself. Now I can show up for people again, it's like a sandwich, right? So taking even just those very tangible class times, we can think about how this can impact us outside of the mat. And that's ultimately what we're doing here. It's deeper than the map

Lady Charmaine:

way deeper. I spoke with a group of event planners and you know, one of the phrases that I use because we we do say all the time that Yoga is a practice. And it's where we let go of perfection. And I use that with them. You know, this Yoga is a time to practice and to play, and to take off your perfectionist hat and to feel into your body and do what feels right. If that is long held stretches like just it breathing into that space, then that's what's right for you in that moment. It's playing and you know, wiggling your hips around and you know, throwing your legs in the air, you know, getting real spunky. If you want to do a handstand and you do you, you know, go do it. I'm proud of you. Good. You go do those handstands and I will watch it, I will clap for you. And encourage you all the way home. I so I think that's a big thing we need to remember is it's not even how much yoga you do. It's really about just showing up to practice.

Kristen:

Yes, showing up for yourself. And sometimes if you don't feel like showing up for yourself, what's great about it is the accountability. Having a live classes, like if you are type A and you do need appointments, and you do need accountability in that sense, you've got it, the structure is there. It's a reliable, predictable structure. So that's what's comfort to you. But once you get there, that's when you can kind of step out and say, Okay, I made it from here on now, I can still check off the box on my calendar that said I came and that gives me that satisfaction. But I get to do whatever I want in this space. Like you said

Mx Zephy:

I have two things on there. So the first one is like twerking and Goddess Pose is a whole fucking thing. Let me tell you what twerking and Goddess Pose is like a power move in itself.

Kristen:

Move that energy

Lady Charmaine:

I do. Yeah. I did that upside down like handstand style at a wall in a library one time.

Mx Zephy:

Go ahead.

Lady Charmaine:

That's a story

Mx Zephy:

and the other. And the other thing I really love about this, too, is like it's bringing boundaries into play, because I think that's something that we don't talk about a lot is like, when I think of the golden rule, which is like doing like, what, I forget what the golden rule actually is now it's like escaping me whatever. When I think of the golden rule, there is no sense of boundaries because you're kind of imposing what you want on somebody else. There's no consent, there's no asking what do you want so there's no there's no ability to create and craft these boundaries in order to create like healthy sustaining relationships. And so when we look at the Platinum rule, like everything that y'all are talking about whether this is in a work context, whether this is like showing up on the mat, whether this is in your personal life, there's a lot of creating boundaries. And these boundaries are not rigid either. These are flexible boundaries that change and adapt, depending on where you're at. And especially like when you're on the mat, like, I love the I love how what you're talking about is just saying, like, this is what this feels like for me right now. This is what my limit is, it's like, I think everybody we say in yoga is called meeting your appropriate edge and saying, This is what I need right now. And that's the boundary. And I think that is what's so beautiful about this, and about the Platinum rule is it's allowing us to create boundaries, even though when we don't know what boundaries mean, because we can decide for ourselves, how does this feel for me, and then try to imagine how it might feel for somebody else. Because we're already working at that place of Connect, and that place of empathy within ourselves that it makes it really easy to translate that off the mat and start thinking, Alright, so now that I'm off the mat, how is this showing up in my relation to x person? And how can I translate these lessons and put them out here? And then thinking about like, is there consent here in this relationship? Is this me saying, Hmm, this feels good to me but I don't know, if you feel it's like, well, I don't want to speak too much on black people's, you know, things because I'm not a black person. So I can't speak of their experience. But it's like when people just randomly want to touch a black person's hair, don't fucking do that, that's their hair, like, I don't care, don't care if it looks like it soften in like a damn cotton ball, don't them touch it, just don't do it. And I think it's just that cultivating that awareness comes from that boundary setting.

Kristen:

Mm hmm. And with that, too, is the perspective from an instructor versus student. So most of you are yoga instructors now. And there's this other side of we're going to anticipate the needs of our target audience, we're going to have a good idea of who may be showing up, we're going to offer things that could make them feel heard and make them feel seen. But we're also going to make sure that we're noticing they may need to have permission to set those boundaries at first. So teaching people how to set boundaries is also part of what we do. So teaching people to say, you know, if this is your limits, you can stop here and or you know, any pose, you can pause whenever it feels like that's your spot. So we do that, because teaching people how to do that is also transferable, like he said, It's okay, well, if as an instructor, even just if you were to take the instructor course, become a teacher, you're just you're on that other side of accountability, because you've learned how to be accommodating to people without overstepping without giving advices unsolicited or without saying things that aren't necessarily or doing things that aren't necessarily appropriate. And so you learn that from the course I've seen people grow into this mindfulness of not spilling too much of their own or projecting too much of themselves, which is really powerful. And it helps us to learn that for, for our students to learn that as well to say, Well, this is really empowering, I don't feel like I'm being told what to do. I feel like I'm being invited. And it's an open invitation. and inviting is different than instructing in that sense. But inviting can feel like, a good It's like when you get that birthday invite or you get that zoom birthday these days. You feel like you're welcome to join, you get to accept you get to say maybe or you get to say no. That's ModiYoga.

Lady Charmaine:

Well, and with that, too, I think, you know, there's so much pressure that's taken off in a virtual studio aspect. Because you get so many more options, you get to show up on camera, or not on camera, you get to show up and speak at the end, if you want to say say something to the instructors or chat with the other attendees, or you can choose not to and to log off right away, like you have so many more choices. You know, we have some people, some regulars was like, I know what the inside of their homes look like. And now they're my friends. Like, I know what their pets look like, I know what what all of this is about. And there's other people, if they're having a bad day, they don't have to be on camera, they don't they can choose to still show up for themselves without showing me anything and that is okay. So you know, it takes that pressure off of feeling like you need to show up a certain way or with a certain look and then walk into a classroom and find a spot you know, and there's so so there can be a lot of awkwardness that goes on in that time of walking into a new yoga studio or walking into a yoga studio when you are having a really bad day and your energy is already off. Or you're someone who suffers from anxiety and depression or you're just an introvert that does not want any part of somebody sweating near you. You like, it takes a lot of those pressures away. And so in that ModiYoga is again, adhering to this Platinum rule of allowing someone to show up in the way that fits them, not in the way we think that they should show up.

Kristen:

And what surprises me every time is people will come on and share like their deeper story. Because they'll see I'm wearing a sweater and baggy pants to class. And that's okay as the instructor right. And they're like, Oh, I don't feel too good. My hair's a little mess. I've got a messy bun. And I want to show up to class. They're turning that video on and they're saying, Thank you. This is how my day is going. They start off usually saying, this is where I'm at. And it's so helpful for us to know that. And then at the end, she's like smiles and affirmations. And like, I'm ready for bed. And it's just so sweet to see that transformation across even just 30 minutes, you know? Oh,

Lady Charmaine:

absolutely. Oh, well. Okay, so if someone wants to get in touch with you, Kristen how does somebody get in touch with you? Sure. So they can come on over to our website, affirmationsandinnovations.com. So that's all spelled out. And you can just go right there and check out the modiyoga virtual studio, this is a drop in option or you can become a member. And you can also join us with the affirmations and innovations. modiyoga teacher certification right now we have the level 200 slash level one class, and we're building out level two soon. And if you want to ask me a question, you can find me at Kristen@affirmationsandinnovations.com, or you can go on Instagram, affirmations_innovations. So all of the things there's like 10 more, but those are what I'll leave. Yeah, yeah, some of us have social media problems like we all do. It's it's part of our, our thing. Now I know this is totally gonna put you on the spot. But since you're an energy healer as well, would you be interested in leading the guided meditation today?

Kristen:

Let's do it. I'm here for it.

Lady Charmaine:

I love it.

Unknown:

Let me put my mason jars down.

Lady Charmaine:

yeah, I'm inviting you is that now you get to say, Yes, I did. Okay.

Kristen:

All right. Ah, let's all just take a little exhale, like a, just let those shoulders drop. Gently close the eyes or just face them towards the grounds. Enjoy the dog bark. breathing into the belly. Slowly exhaling. allowing yourself to just melt into whatever seat you're in, release your tailbone, let your lower back release. Take a moment to look behind your eyelids. We don't always do this. Take out any image or any visual that you may have in your mind and just look behind your eyelids and notice what color you see. Notice if there's any lightness and then coming into the breath through the nose now feeling the belly rise and fall or in the present moment. So we're going to notice, what do we hear? What do we smell? What do you feel what is the texture of whatever your hands are on. Maybe even notice if you have a taste in your mouth. Just coming into the present moment. We'll take three big cleansing breaths all together. So inhale through the nose, filling up that belly. Open that mouth and exhale it all out. Another one inhaling through the nose, filling up the belly. Open the mouth exhale. And one more. Inhale through the nose, fill up the belly and let it all out. And when you're ready, just slowly blink the eyes open staring at the floor. Just start when you're ready. Go ahead and observe your space with your eyes.

Mx Zephy:

Yes, thank you so much, that was beautiful. And I think what I'm walking away from this is that like, the Platinum rule is so healing. Like we talked A lot about inclusivity. We talked about meeting people where they're at. We talked about compassion, and fostering and encouraging empathy and just meeting people where they're at and wherever they're at, whether it's on the mat, whether it's in a relationship, whether it's at work, like whatever that is. And it just feels like, this is such a healing space. And I really want to thank you for showing up and like offering that because I think putting this in a context like yoga, where it's a very Mind Body connection, it was just beautiful. And I like I'm walking away, like, I can't almost stop smiling just because of just how wonderful this conversation was. And I really, really think you and appreciate you for showing up and taking time with us today.
